The Guy

Posted By Damjan DeNoble

Due to its length, and the fact that it’s a personal account, and not an objective observation about an aspect of the Asia health care industry, I have posted a piece I call “The Guy” on a separate part of this website.  It is a very personal story, but also one I felt important to write down so to have it survive the effects that time can have on one’s memory.

The quickest way to access it is to click “The Guy” tab at the top of the page.

It can also be found here.

Below is the introduction to the piece.

The difference between expats in China and expats in Thailand is that the former are running away from their lives, while the latter are running away from the international police.

This is one of the biggest and most recent lessons I have learned while living and working in China. Like any lesson, it is not a steadfast rule, but a guideline that once incorporated into the decision making process, can help one avoid some of the more dangerous pitfalls lurking in the Asia-Pacific maze of human-business interaction.

I share with you now the long story of how I came to appreciate the wisdom of this lesson.  The following is a true account of my time in Beijing and my experience with a career-artist/con man from Thailand who I refer to in this piece as “The Guy”.  His real name, and names of other people and companies have been changed and/or omitted. Enjoy the read.
